Supply List Content
As we progress throughout the membership we will use lots of different supplies but to get you started and to keep you going these are the basics that you will need:
1.Sketchbook
If you want to keep all your practice in one place. Alternatively you can just choose to use watercolour loose paper sheets. They come in many formats and sizes. My favourite would include:
Stillman and Birn Betta Series
Seawhiete Concertina Sketchbook
Pith Sketchbooks particularly good with multi mediums
Sketch Pads or loose paper such as:
Canson XL Sketch Pad
Daler Rowney Aquafine Watercolour Gummed Pad
2.Permanent Liners or Fountain Pen with permanent Ink
Permanent markers are good on thin and smooth papers but when dealing with heavy Watercolour paper with texture fountain pens are a better fit.
Fountain pen permanent ink
Pencil
Any HB pencil or a mechanical pencil will do. Use what you are comfortable with.
Eraser
Though I will encourage you to keep the use to the minimum and embrace the wiggly lines on your pages.
Watercolours
This is a world on its own. If you are someone who is just starting and don’t own a set. Starting with a student grade sets such as Windsor and Newton Cottman will get you going. However if this is something you will do on the long run and want to truly experience the lush saturated pigments then going just bit higher buying the artist grade such as Schmincke Horodam will take your experience to the next level.
Brushes
These could include anything you already have and prefer using. I like a mix between natural and synthetic in one brush which gives me the best of both worlds. Currently I use Rosemary and Co. as well as Da Vinci Travel Brushes.
- Round Brush. a number 6,8 & 10.
- Dagger Brush. One I use the most and all the time. It allows for different strokes and thicknesses without having to change your brush. Very good when sketching fast or on the go.
- Da Vinci Travel Brushes Pure Kolinsky Set
NOTE: Investing in good quality brushes makes all the difference while painting and taking care of your brushes will keep you good for years to come. I have had mine since 2016 and still use them.
Additional supplies will include:
- Fiber cloth for mopping your brushes. I always buy black and have it in a bulk to wash and always have extra on the go. Black means I don't see the mess and smudges while mopping. Just a personal preference.
- Container for your water supply while out and about. At home use whatever you have on hand. A mason jar or a cup.
- Recycled paper (old paper from discarded printouts to use for sampling colour or keep between the pages of your sketchbook while sketching)
