Your Sketching Kit while out and about in your hometown

When out and about we all have our preferred Sketching Kit that we go to. That kit usually changes depending on the place and style of sketching. Packing a kit for sketching in one’s own town is different than packing when traveling abroad. So here is a list of the bear minimum to pack when you are out and about sketching.

Your Sketching Kit while out and about in your home town

To Keep things simple this is how your list of the sketching kit would look like:

  • Bag – Big bag in winter to hold your extra layers that keep you warm
  • Stool
  • Sketching gear in any container a.k.a a brush roll, a small pouch, a big pouch and so on
  • Comfy Shoes!
  • Coffee optional though it does add to the joy while sketching specially in winter

Sketching Kit in Detail

Now lets dig just a little bit deeper…

When it comes to the bag the world is your oyster. I just find it easier when I am sketching in Kuwait where there is no much walking and everything is accessible via a car that a nice big fabric bag is the best fit. It fits my sketching gear, my tiny stool and my extra scarf, jumper if it gets cold. However if I was in a place where I knew there would be loads of walking a back pack would be a must to allow me to carry the extra weight on my back without limiting my move and causing pain.

The shoes! Now I am not the one to tell you what to wear but this is essential. Your shoes need to be comfy and sturdy to allow you to navigate different areas and sit or stand for longer hours without getting annoyed by a throbbing pain that tight trendy shoes might give you. While we are on the clothing subject it is also worth while mentioning that you need to be wearing something comfy and more sporty which will allow you to move with ease and sit/stand in any position without obstructing your movement.

The Kit! That is a bit tricky because we all have our sketching styles and preferences. Generally speaking majority of sketchers use watercolors for their durability and ease of access when out and about sketching. You also need to think about what you will use to hold the kit together. The container. Whatever that container is make sure that it works for you and that it allows you to access your gear as easy and as fast as possible on the go. You generally need is a:

Sketching Kit the Basics

  • Watercolour palette
  • Brush
  • Water Container
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Fountain pen or a liner both with permanent ink

I like to hold my gear in a brush roll and therefore I have created my own sketching kit which you can read more about here. Though that is also not a rule. I do tend to change my kit depending on the mood and style of sketching but this is just a general one that I almost resort to most of the time. You will find your best fit as soon as you start getting out there and experimenting.

Happy Sketching!
